Golden Rules for Link Building

Research the Industry and look for community standards: Start with finding more about the industry you are in. If you sell online greeting cards find out other competitors and who links back to them. By doing this you can similarly target web sites which have linked back other greeting card sites. Search for trade journals and industry associations and find what the community they cater to. Try to look for niche areas. For instance, in the above example you can find out how many links point to greeting card association web sites and then identify these web sites and ask them for a link back. Look out for communities and try to find out if your site can be a part of that community.

Look out for Link Friendly Indicators: A link friendly site will have a links page. Approaching sites with a link page increases your conversion ratio. That does not mean that you can’t approach web sites without a link page. But the probability of the webmaster linking back to you is much remote. The smartest way to proceed is mail the link friendly pages first and then set a time span to mail web sites without link pages.

Study the Content Holistically: Focus holistically on the content. Don’t get ruled by the content of the link pages only. Try to find the pages where you feel your link would best fit. Sometimes you will find some relevant information pertaining to your product(s) and/or service(s) scattered in some internal pages. Make a distinction between link friendliness and content stickiness.

Personalizing Link Exchange Emails: Do not use the same version of emails to send to all webmasters. Remember your emails ultimately reach humans who like everyone else loves to be treated in a special way. Copy and pasting emails might seem tempting but ultimately they are spam and once you are blacklisted by spamcop your entire marketing campaign crumbles. One way of personalizing emails is to mention the URL of the link page of that web site you are sending an email to and mentioning that you would like to be linked at that page. This would allow you some level of customization and at the same time would not cut down on your email numbers.

Track your Link Campaign: Keeping a track of all webmasters whom you have emailed is not only useful but in these days it’s a must. Emailing webmasters multiple times could get you into lots of trouble. In fact you could be blacklisted and if that happens you can forget about online marketing for the next few weeks or months. In order to track your link campaign more effectively you can use a tool which has given me immense help. Make 4 columns in Excel. One for websites whom you have mailed, another for webmasters who has replied, the third for webmasters who have refused a link and the fourth who have linked to you. You can use a a color scheme which I call RBY radar check. Red color is for webmasters who has refused a link, the green for all replies and yellow for the links which you have got. Do not be afraid to explain the benefits of a link exchange and educate fellow webmasters on your own personal experiences. Do not assume that all webmasters know everything about building traffic. Educate, Inform and Update yourself.
